FAQs
What is hijama?
Hijama derives from the Arabic word ‘hajm’, which means sucking. Also known as ‘wet cupping’, hijama is a traditional alternative medicine that involves creating a vacuum on the skin and drawing out blood from small incisions.
The act of performing hijama is a Sunnah of the Prophet ﷺ and is reported in a wide collection of ahadith.
What should I do BEFORE my hijama session?
Hijama is best done on an empty stomach is best, so it is recommended to fast from food for about 3 hours prior to your session, but drink plenty of water/fluids up until your appointment.
Shave/trim long hairs on your back/shoulders, as necessary.
Wear a comfortable, loose fitting shirt, which may get blood or oil on it.
What should I do AFTER my hijama session?
It’s recommended to avoid dairy and red meat for the day of and the day after your hijama session.
Drink plenty of water/fluids and avoid strenuous activity. You will be losing blood during the session, and engaging in strenuous exercise too soon can cause fainting and lightheadedness.
Avoid bathing/showering for about 24 hours.
Continue applying olive oil or black seed oil to your hijama sites to relieve itchiness, aid healing and reduce the chance of infection.
Is hijama painful?
Hijama is generally not painful, but can be uncomfortably once the cups are placed, due to a ‘stretching’ or ‘pulling’ feeling from the vacuum created in the cups. The surface cuts/pricks made on the skin may also cause discomfort, but only for short bursts (less than 10 seconds at a time).
Who should not do hijama?
Anyone taking blood-thinning medications such as aspirin or warfarin should refrain from hijama, as the incision site may not close properly and can increase the risk for infection.
Anyone with a terminal illness.
How long until the cupping marks are gone?
The cupping marks/bruises will gradually become lighter day by day, and (generally) should disappear in about 2 - 3 weeks.
How do I pay?
Payment can be made at the end of your session. Currently we only accept cash, Venmo and Zelle.
Do you offer services for females?
Currently we are only serving MALES, due to not having a female practitioner. InshaAllah with time we do plan to offer this service for everyone.
